From seed to cigar.
Three leaves, one cigar.
Every hand-rolled cigar is built on three layers, each with its own character and purpose.
Filler
The heart. A blend of aged leaves from several primings. It sets aroma, strength and the long, even burn.
Binder
The supporting frame. Sturdier and more neutral in flavour. It holds the filler in place and shapes the draw.
Wrapper
The signature. The flawless, most aromatic leaf. It carries the first notes and the look.
This is how a cigar is made at Tabacos de Costa Rica in Puriscal, from tobacco bought two years before production.
Seeding
Pure-strain seeds are raised in protected beds until the seedlings are strong enough for the field.
Harvest
Leaf by leaf, by hand and in several passes: from the bottom of the plant upward, as each leaf ripens.
Drying
The leaves hang for weeks in the casas de tabaco, until green has turned into a deep brown.
Fermentation
Stacked in piles, turned and monitored. Multiple cycles in which aromas mature and edges soften.
Rolling
Filler, binder, wrapper: experienced torcedores roll each cigar by hand and test every draw.
Aging
Rest after rolling. No cigar leaves Puriscal before it's ready.
